Usage rights describe what a brand is allowed to do with the content you delivered, for how long, where, and in which paid contexts.
Why brands ask
They want to run ads, put the film on a website, or recycle it in retail without coming back to you every week. That is reasonable. “Unlimited, in perpetuity, worldwide, paid and organic” as a default on a one-Reel fee is not.
Organic vs paid
Organic usually means they may post it on their own unpaid channels. Paid means ads, boosted posts, or media you did not control. Paid is a different product. Price it.
Whitelisting (ads through *your* handle) is another product again.
Common durations
30, 60, 90 days, six months, one year. After the window, they should stop paid use or renew. If they will not name a window, assume they want forever and quote accordingly.
What to charge extra for
Paid social, CTV, OOH, packaging, long windows, exclusivity stacked on top, and raw files they will recut.
Scenario
Maya delivers a Reel. The fee assumed a post on her grid. Nova runs it as an Instagram ad for four months. Unless the quote included paid usage for four months, Maya should invoice the difference or they should take it down.
